Bay Cities Italian Deli and Bakery in Santa Monica is the home of my all-time favorite LA sandwich - The Godmother with The Works and Hot Peppers.
A visit to Bay Cities is an event in itself - The small parking lot is almost always chaotic, and street parking can be impossible especially during peak hours, but anything worth having is worth a little struggle, as The Godmother certainly is.
The bread is house made, with a toothsome outer crust that roughs up the roof of your mouth a little upon first bite. This sandwich is packed with prosciutto, ham, capicola, mortadella, Genoa salami and provolone, dressed with Sicilian style hot giardiniera, Italian dressing, lettuce, mayo, yellow mustard, onions, pickles, and tomatoes. It's a sandwich that would make Tony Soprano proud.
Get the large size for lunch and save half for dinner because it gets a better with a little age.
